485 visa

The Morrison government will consider offering an extension or freeze to expiring working international student 485 visa, according to Immigration Minister Alex Hawke.

International students with the 485 visa which allows them to work have expressed concern over fears their visas will expire without every entering Australia.

The 485 visa allows international students to work in Australia while studying but does have a legislated time limit which could affect visa holders who have yet to enter Australia.

Mr Hawke told Sky News international students are an “important priority” for the federal government.

“We have made announcements in the past about rolling over visas or offering people an extension without penalty, and we will consider that and when we’re ready to announce that we will,” he said.
